The Civil Marriage Equality Bill (ESSB 6239) was signed into law by Governor Christine Gregoire on February 13th 2012. Later that day, Referendum 74 was lodged on behalf of "Preserve Marriage Washington" to repeal the Civil Marriage Equality law and prevent it from taking effect. R-74 requires 120,577 valid signatures to be submitted by June 6th, 2012 for the measure to qualify for the ballot.
Earlier in January, Initiative 1192 was filed in anticipation of the Civil Marriage Equality Bill passing the legislature. I-1192 requires 241,153 valid signatures to be submitted by July 6th, 2012 for the measure to qualify for the ballot.
